Attraction #6
The life of Captain John Howard, a Loyalist who is buried at St Paul’s in Hampton, typifies the hardships of the Loyalist experience. From Duchess County, NY, he was sent in 1779 with the King’s Orange Rangers to a garrison in Nova Scotia. His wife Lucy waited in New York until John got settled. On the way to Nova Scotia the ship carrying the family sank – Lucy and seven of her eight children drowned. Howard married again, but his second wife died of unknown causes within a year. He married a third time, but this bride died two months after her wedding day when her smallpox inoculation turned into full-blown smallpox. His fourth marriage lasted: Patience Howard lived to be 91 and is buried with her husband
